Alykanas Beach
The local beach at Alykanas is a long, gently shelving sandy beach ideal for families with young children. The water is crystal clear and shallow for a good distance from shore. Sun loungers and parasols are available for hire, and Sunset Beach Bar provides refreshments throughout the day. Best time to visit: Early morning before 10am for the most peaceful experience.
Makris Gialos & Planos Beach
A short drive south of Alykanas, Makris Gialos is a popular organised beach with a full range of facilities including water sports, beach bars and restaurants. The Blue Caves snorkelling spots just off the northern tip are accessible by pedal boat.
Cape Skinari & Blue Caves
The Blue Caves at Cape Skinari, 15km from Alykanas, are among the most photographed sights in Greece. The sea caves create extraordinary blue light reflections on the water. Best visited in the morning when the light is at its peak. Boat trips from Alykanas Marina depart daily.
Shipwreck Beach (Navagio)
No guide to Zakynthos is complete without mentioning the Shipwreck. The MV Panagiotis, stranded in 1980, now rusts dramatically on a pristine white pebble beach surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. Accessible only by boat — tours depart from Alykanas Marina. Go early to beat the crowds.
Marathonisi (Turtle Island)
A tiny uninhabited island 30 minutes by boat from Alykanas, Marathonisi is a key nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta). Swimming is allowed at designated zones only, and you may be lucky enough to spot turtles in the clear water. Visit with a licensed boat tour operator.
